Band Maid® – 『スリル』

Okay – this one’s been out for a little while – since November 2014. When we started doing New Music Monday, we said it was for music that was brand new, or at least brand new to us. Well, before 20 LB Sledge linked to them, we’d never heard of them, so… they’re new to us.

A bunch of hot Asian chicks in french maid costumes, playing incredible metal. What more could you ask for?

Oddly, the first words you hear sound an awful lot like “making you gay.” Uhhhh. We think not – well, unless you’re a lady, in which case, we’d totally get it.

Stephen Hawking – Monty Python’s Galaxy Song

Stephen F!@#$ing Hawking covers Monty F!@#$ing Python.

They Might Be Giants – Thinking Machine

Remy – Best Song Ever! (Tax Code Edition)

Thankfully, tax season is over – unless you filed an extension – so while you wait on your refund, or cry over having to pay even more, here’s a little ditty to brighten your day.

Breaking Benjamin – Angels Fall

Breaking Benjamin with an emo anthem. The drums are pretty interesting, as usual.

Donnie Trumpet & the Social Experiment – Sunday Candy “Short Film”

A rap love song that isn’t completely crass. How refreshing.

Ratatat – Cream on Chrome

A little techno and repetitive for my taste – it’s basically “let’s pick a groove, put it on repeat for a few bars, then layer another groove on top of that, then right when you’re about sick of it, do the same thing with a different groove.”

With that said, the visualization they film is pretty damned cool. It looks like a bunch of fluorescent tubes next to each other, but we’ve never seen fluorescent tubes fluoresce quite like this.

Florence + The Machine – Ship To Wreck

Fairly standard, folksy, break up song, but with some really strong vocals.

Brand New – Mene

An ode to emotional detachment disorder?

New Music Monday – March 30, 2015

Last week was a bit of a bummer; one good song and a bunch of stinkers. Well, this week more than made up for it. Muse continues to kick ass. Steve Martin and Edie Brickell team up to prove that bluegrass isn’t just hillbillies being told how to dance. Rob Scallion breaks away from the guitar. They Might Be Giants are back. Therapy? makes their entire album available to stream for free.

Muse – Dead Inside

A bit more on the techno side of Muse’s eclectic range. If you’re at work, be aware that this lyric video features a naked girl dancing in a kaleidoscope effect. Lots of boobies.

Steve Martin Featuring Edie Brickell – Pretty Little One

If you haven’t noticed his musical efforts since the late 1970’s, you might expect Steve Martin to be doing reprises of “King Tut”, but in fact, he’s been doing an awful lot of bluegrass music – he’s incredible on the banjo. And if you haven’t noticed her musical career since the mid 1980’s, you might think Edie Brickell stopped after singing about not getting too deep in “What I Am.” In fact, she’s… well, honestly, I haven’t noticed her career since then — that is, until a few months back when I found out she was collaborating with Martin.

Here they perform a duet of sorts, telling a great story about a moronic brute who thinks he can take advantage of a girl who knows how to protect herself.

Rob Scallion – Theremin

Scallion normally plays guitar, but he set a goal that with 500 Patreon patrons, he would get and play a theremin song. Here it is:

They Might Be Giants – Underwater Woman

A bit experimental, even for TMBG.

Therapy? – Disquiet FULL ALBUM

We featured their song “Still Hurts” two weeks ago. Now you can check out the whole album. If you like disturbing Irish metal, then this is the album for you.

New Music Monday – March 23, 2015

This week we’ve got one piece of excellence, and a whole bunch of stinkers. Can’t all be winners, I guess!

Neil Cicierega – Crocodile Chop

Cicierega apparently loves to mash disparate music together, and when it works, the result is nothing short of awesome. A perfect example of this is Crocodile Chop, a mashup of Chop Suey by System of a Down and Crocodile Rock by Elton John. Both songs are reasonably good, but when you take Elton John’s silly piano and layer on Serj Tankian’s – er – demented lyrics and aggressive style, and you get something which can only be described as fantastic.

Nickelback – She Gets Me Up

Nickelback gets a lot of crap. People claim they’re mediocre at best, or overly commercialized, or whatever. They do tend to be a little bit formulaic – do we really need yet another anthem? In reality, of course, they’re not bad at all. There’s nothing wrong with trying to write music that you think will sell; it’s certainly no worse than trying to make a movie that you think people will want to pay to see.

With that out of the way, I’m not terribly impressed with this effort; they step outside of their comfort zone by trying to infuse a little funk into their sound, and for me at least, it falls flat.

Rob Zombie – Ging Gang Gong De Do Gong De Laga Raga (Live)

Standard Zombie formula – sounds a lot like Dragula. Video is NSFW – lots of girls who mistake a Zombie concert for a filming of Girls Gone Wild.

U2 – Every Breaking Wave

U2 puts out a new song that seems to be heavily influenced by a band who seemed to be heavily influenced by them, Coldplay. They need to just merge, form a super-band, and be done with it.

Falling In Reverse – “Just Like You”

Being on the same record label that produced Bad Religion for all these years does not necessarily mean that you’re any good. If Blink-182 sucked twice as much as they do, they’d still be better than this.

Jay-Z & Kanye West – “Who Gon Stop Me (16bit Remix)”

Let’s face it. Both of these guys suck. How could anybody expect a remix to be any good?

5 Funniest Videos From The Onion

Are these really the funniest videos from The Onion? There’s so damned many. It’s very probable that these aren’t the funniest videos, in which case, we’re really sorry. But you know what? They’re pretty damned funny, though, so enjoy them anyway, and then check out the rest of the Onion’s videos.
